PTFE Self-Lubricating Bushings for Food Processing Equipment

Food processing machinery operators face a persistent challenge: maintaining equipment reliability while preventing lubricant contamination of food products. PTFE self-lubricating bushings, commonly known as DU bearings, are emerging as a preferred solution in washdown environments across meat processing, bakery, and beverage filling lines. These bearings eliminate the need for external grease or oil, directly addressing contamination risks that can trigger costly product recalls and regulatory audits under HACCP programs.

Regulatory compliance for food-contact bearings centers on FDA 21 CFR 177.1550, which governs perfluorocarbon resins used in repeated food contact surfaces. Virgin PTFE used in DU bushings meets this standard when the specific formulation is certified, allowing direct contact with all food types (aqueous, acidic, fatty, and alcoholic) at continuous service temperatures up to 260°C. In Europe, EU Regulation 10/2011 establishes similar migration limits for plastic materials in food contact applications. DU bearings with stainless steel backings (DU-S series) pair naturally with 300-series stainless steel shafts, forming corrosion-resistant motion assemblies that withstand caustic washdown chemicals and hot water sanitization cycles common in CIP (clean-in-place) systems.

The DU bearing's three-layer construction, steel backing with a sintered porous bronze interlayer and PTFE/MoS₂ composite overlay, delivers a static load capacity of 140 N/mm² and a PV limit of 3.6 N/mm²·m/s. In a food conveyor application moving packaged goods through a 80°C washdown tunnel, a 20 mm ID DU bushing on a 304 stainless steel shaft operates maintenance-free for over 8,000 hours without relubrication. The PTFE overlay transfers a thin transfer film to the mating shaft surface, reducing the coefficient of friction to approximately 0.05–0.15 and eliminating stick-slip at low speeds. This dry-running behavior is especially valuable on form-fill-seal packaging machines, where grease migration onto sealing films would compromise package integrity.

Equipment designers in the poultry and fish processing sectors increasingly specify DU-F flanged bushings in conveyor pivot points and DU-W thrust washers in vertical screw conveyors. These components tolerate frequent high-pressure washdown with foam cleaners and sanitizers containing peracetic acid or sodium hypochlorite at concentrations up to 200 ppm. Unlike filled PTFE compounds containing bronze or carbon (which are generally not FDA-compliant), the virgin PTFE overlay in a standard DU bushing formulation avoids metal migration concerns while maintaining the chemical inertness that makes PTFE the material of choice in food zones. The bearings are also available in detectable material variants for facilities employing metal detection and X-ray inspection systems as part of their foreign body control plan.
