ISO 3547 Wrapped Bushing Standards Update 2026
The global sliding bearing market, valued at USD 12.64 billion in 2025, is projected to reach USD 16.45 billion by 2030 at a 5.41% CAGR according to Mordor Intelligence. Wrapped bronze bushings compliant with ISO 3547 account for a substantial portion of this market, especially in industrial machinery applications that held 36.44% of total market share in 2024. The 2023 revision of ISO 3547-2 introduces updated test data requirements for outside and inside diameter verification of mono and multi-layer wrapped bushes, replacing the previous 2017 edition.
ISO 3547 is a seven-part standard governing wrapped bushing dimensions, tolerances, and quality control. Part 1 (ISO 3547-1:2018) defines dimensional specifications including housing bore diameter (DH), outside diameter (Do), shaft diameter (DS), and wall thickness parameters: s1 for backing thickness, s2 for bearing material layer, and s3 for total wall thickness. For mono-material bushes, s1 or s2 equals s3. Part 2 (ISO 3547-2:2023) specifies test data for diameter measurements. A key note: wall thickness is measured in the free condition, so no special test data are required on the drawing (see Parts 5 and 6). The standard warns that bushes with lubrication holes, grooves, or bore indentations can show distortion, and wall thickness should be measured away from these areas. Part 3 (ISO 3547-3:2020) covers lubrication hole, groove, and indentation design.
For engineers specifying wrapped bronze bearings like FB090 (CuSn8P with diamond oil grooves per DIN 1494) and FB092 (CuSn8P with circular oil pockets), compliance with ISO 3547-1 dimensions and ISO 3547-2 test data is mandatory for quality assurance. GGB, reporting approximately USD 150 million in sales, and Oiles at roughly USD 200 million, both produce wrapped bushings conforming to these dimensional standards. The bronze wrapped bearing segment is growing at a reported 13.2% CAGR from 2026 to 2033 per Synapse Researches. Demand is driven by automotive, construction, and agricultural machinery sectors. In hydraulic cylinder and pump applications, ISO 3547-compliant wrapped bushes offer a cost-effective solution where boundary lubrication is acceptable. For maintenance-free installations in hard-to-access locations, graphite-plugged JDB bronze bearings are the preferred choice, operating at 300 to 400°C without external lubrication.
Asia-Pacific holds 43.18% of the global sliding bearing market share as of 2024. China's rail grid expansion to 60,000 km by 2030 continues to drive demand for standardized journal bearings. Schaeffler's OPTIME sensor system can flag bearing failures up to six months early, and PTFE composites reinforced with carbon nanotubes achieve friction coefficients below 0.05 at 200°C per recent industry data. With ISO 3547-2:2023 now enforced, bearing suppliers must ensure wrapped bushings meet updated diameter verification protocols to qualify for global procurement contracts.
