FB090 Wrapped Bronze Bearings for Hydraulic Cylinders
Hydraulic cylinders operate under demanding conditions, with piston rods and pistons subjected to continuous sliding, side loads, shock, and vibration. The bearing components that support these moving parts must deliver reliable performance under high loads, dirty environments, and limited lubrication. FB090 wrapped bronze bearings, manufactured from CuSn8P phosphor bronze strip per DIN 1494 and ISO 3547, have become a standard solution for hydraulic cylinder rod guide and piston support applications. Their combination of strength, embedability, and conformability makes them well suited for the punishing cycles found in excavators, cranes, forklifts, and industrial hydraulic systems.
CuSn8P (tin bronze with approximately 0.3% phosphorus) offers a hardness range of HB 90–120 and a maximum static load capacity of 120 N/mm2. The material provides good corrosion resistance, which is particularly important in hydraulic systems where moisture, hydraulic fluid, and external contaminants are present. The wrapped construction, formed from cold-rolled bronze strip, produces a thin-wall bushing that reduces both weight and envelope size compared to traditional cast bronze bearings. This thin-wall design — typically 1.0 to 2.5 mm wall thickness — allows cylinder manufacturers to reduce overall cylinder dimensions without sacrificing load capacity.

Diamond Oil Grooves and Lubrication Performance
The distinguishing feature of the FB090 series is the pattern of diamond-shaped oil grooves rolled into the bearing surface. These indentations serve as reservoirs for grease or oil, ensuring that lubricant is available at the sliding interface throughout the operating cycle. During assembly, the grooves are filled with a lithium-based or high-temperature grease. As the piston rod moves, lubricant is drawn from the pockets across the bearing surface by hydrodynamic and boundary lubrication effects. This self-contained lubrication system reduces maintenance frequency and extends service intervals in applications where re-greasing access is limited or impractical.
The diamond groove geometry provides several advantages over simpler groove patterns. The intersecting channels distribute lubricant evenly across the entire bearing width, preventing dry spots that could lead to localized scoring or galling. The grooves also trap wear debris and contaminants, preventing them from traveling along the rod surface and causing abrasive wear. This makes FB090 bearings particularly suitable for hydraulic cylinders used in agricultural and construction equipment, where dust, mud, and debris are unavoidable.
Piston Rod Guide Bushing Applications
In a hydraulic cylinder, the rod guide bushing is located in the cylinder head or end cap, where it supports the piston rod as it extends and retracts. This bushing must absorb side loads from the attachment, maintain concentric alignment, and prevent rod deflection that could damage the rod seal. FB090 bushings with diamond grooves provide the necessary radial support while maintaining low friction against the chrome-plated or induction-hardened rod surface.
The CuSn8P alloy's embedability — the ability to absorb hard particles without damaging the mating surface — is critical here. When contaminants enter the cylinder through the rod wiper seal, the bronze material allows small particles to embed into the bearing surface rather than scoring the rod. This extends rod life and maintains seal integrity over thousands of operating hours.
Piston Support Bushings
FB090 bearings also serve as piston support bushings, mounted on the piston to guide it within the cylinder bore. In this location, the bushing must withstand radial loads while maintaining a consistent oil film between the piston and bore wall. The diamond grooves ensure that lubricant is retained even when the piston is at rest, preventing dry startup that can cause stick-slip and accelerated wear.
The PV limit of FB090 under oil lubrication reaches 2.3 N/mm2·m/s, with a maximum sliding speed of 2.5 m/s. This covers the majority of hydraulic cylinder operating conditions, where speeds are moderate and loads are high. The material's conformability allows minor geometric misalignments between the piston and bore to be accommodated without edge loading or binding.
Installation and Maintenance Considerations
Proper installation is essential for FB090 bearing performance. The housing bore should be machined to H7 tolerance, and the mating shaft to h8. A press-fit installation using an appropriate arbor ensures the bushing is seated squarely and securely. During installation, the diamond grooves should be filled with grease to provide initial lubrication and prevent dry running during the break-in period.
In hydraulic cylinder repair and refurbishment, replacing worn FB090 bushings can restore cylinder performance to 90–95% of new condition at a fraction of replacement cost. The thin-wall wrapped design simplifies extraction and installation, often allowing repairs to be completed within one to three days rather than the weeks required for cylinder replacement.
