PFOA-Free PTFE Bushings Address EU PFAS Regulations
The European Union banned PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid) under the REACH framework and POPs Regulation in 2020, imposing strict concentration limits on any product containing PTFE manufactured with PFOA, including self-lubricating sliding bearings. In February 2023, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) went further, proposing restrictions on over 10,000 PFAS compounds. A final decision from the European Commission is expected in 2025, with enforcement potentially starting as early as 2026, according to igus, which presented PTFE-free bearing materials at Hannover Messe 2025.
For metal-polymer composite bushings compliant with ISO 3547, the regulatory shift directly affects the PTFE overlay layer. The DU series uses a three-layer structure: steel backing, bronze sintered interlayer, and PTFE/MoS2 composite surface. It delivers a static load capacity of 140 N/mm² and PV limit of 3.6 N/mm²·m/s under dry friction. Manufacturers are now reformulating that PTFE layer using alternative processing agents that eliminate PFOA while retaining the same coefficient of friction and temperature range of -195 to +280°C. igus reported that its PTFE-free iglide G, X, and H materials, launched in April 2025, now cover roughly 80% of its global plain bearing applications, with wear rates in some grades up to 50% lower than PTFE-based predecessors.
The transition plays out differently across bearing types. Wrapped bronze bearings such as FB090 (CuSn6.5P, compliant with DIN 1494) and FB092 (with through-wall oil holes) avoid PTFE entirely and remain unaffected. Graphite-plugged JDB bearings rely on solid graphite lubricant inserts rather than fluoropolymers, making them a natural choice where re-lubrication is impractical, such as marine, heavy machinery, and wind turbine yaw systems. For applications that depend on PTFE's ultra-low friction, the bimetal JF series (steel back with copper alloy lining, static load up to 250 N/mm²) can serve as an intermediate option while PFOA-free PTFE formulations complete qualification testing.
Multiple manufacturers are moving fast. Vesconite confirmed its standard bearing material contains no PFAS or PTFE. Technymon is testing PFOA-free formulations for its plain bearing line and reports strong demand from EU customers. The regulatory timeline is tightening. Companies that cannot document PFOA compliance risk market exclusion in the EU, and as the self-lubricating bearing market, valued at $2.45 billion in 2024, heads toward an estimated $4 billion by 2030 according to MarketsandMarkets, the share of PFOA-free and PTFE-free products will keep growing.
