Why graphite plugs beat grease in a mold

Grease attracts dust, and dust scores guide pins. A graphite-plugged bushing avoids that failure chain completely. Friction heats the contact zone, the graphite expands and smears onto the pin surface, and a self-replenishing film separates bronze from steel. According to JBM, a Chinese manufacturer of graphite plugged bearings, the optimum graphite surface coverage is 20-30% and typical plugs measure 6-8 mm, arranged in a staggered pattern so a film forms in every sliding direction.

Coverage is a balancing act. Less than 20% starves the film, more than 30% cuts the load-bearing bronze area. Base alloy matters just as much. High tensile brass C86300 (CuZn25Al5Mn4Fe3) carries static loads to 100 N/mm², while aluminum bronze C95400 (CuAl10Ni5Fe4) extends the ceiling to 120 N/mm² and the continuous temperature limit to 400°C.

Duty limits that fit mold cycles

Injection mold guide bushings oscillate slowly and carry clamping force, a duty profile that sits inside the JDB envelope: PV limit 1.65 N/mm²·m/s, maximum speed 0.5 m/s, and dry friction between 0.08 and 0.18. Static load capacity of 100 N/mm² covers all but the very largest machines.

How to specify a guide bushing for a mold

Press-fit installation with a light interference fit stops the bushing spinning in its bore, and no re-lubrication is ever needed. For mold shops paying technicians to grease high-cycle tools, that is the practical argument for JDB graphite bronze.
